Goalf is a game whose conception is inspired by golf but also by several other games.

Goalf opposes two players in a tactical and opposite way.

A goalf match spectacle is more likely to be globally followed by spectators, and for this reason is more 'spectacular'.

Golf and goalf are similar

Goalf is played using clubs. Golf clubs are goalf clubs.

Goalf is played using balls. Golf balls are goalf balls.

Golf and goalf differ

Goalf is always played by two opposites players (or teams), who hit the ball alternatively.

Goalf move are only relevant within a match.

One course is sufficient to play a full goalf match.

The match is organized in sets. Set are organized in games and points.

Goalf course

The goalf course is bounded by a course border, designed by the course designer (the border is materialized as white piquets, plus the virtual straight line joining them).

The goalf course contains

  1. the normal fairway
  2. two  start areas  A start area is a circular area centered on a flag. A rope with and small markball at its end is attached to the flag, and the rope length is the radius of the start area. The ball is considered as present in a start area when it is possible to touch it with the markball. The size and position of the two start areas are decided by the course designer.
  3. two  goal areas  A goal area is either similar to a golf green, where putters are used. Or it is more simply a circular area centered on a flag. In the second case, a rope with and small markball at its end is attached to the flag, and the rope length is the radius of the goal area. The ball is considered as present in a goal area when it is possible to touch it with the markball. The size and position of the two goal areas are decided by the course designer.
  4. any number of penalty areas. It is either a water hazard, similar to golf classical water hazard. Or it is more simply a circular area centered on a flag. In the second case, a rope with and small ball at its end is attached to the flag, and the rope length is the radius of the goal area. The ball is considered as present in a penalty area when it is possible to touch it with the markball. The number, size and position of the all penalty areas are decided by the course designer.

Trees, vegetation, slopes, geometry of the course are the responsibilty of the course designer.

Of course it is strongly suggested to design the course in a way pushing players to subtle tactical choices.

The two start area are named here X and Y. The two goal area are named here X and Y. The goal area X is close to the start area X. The goal area Y is close to the start area Y.

If golf bunkers are present in the goalf course, then the course designer may at his own choice organize them as part of the goalf penalty areas, or simply as part of the goalf fairways.

General rules

These are the single player rules. It is assumed that a match opposes 2 players (named here players A and B).

A match contains a given number of sets (agreed or defined by a referee).

A set is considered as a sequence of four games.

In any game, the players play alternatively.

  • For game 1, player A plays first from the starting area X, and his goal is to put the ball in the goal area Y. Player B's goal is to put the ball in the goal area X.
  • For game 2, player B plays first from the starting area X, and his goal is to put the ball in the goal area Y. Player A's goal is to put the ball in the goal area X.
  • For game 3, player A plays first from the starting area Y, and his goal is to put the ball in the goal area X. Player B's goal is to put the ball in the goal area Y.
  • For game 4, player B plays first from the starting area Y, and his goal is to put the ball in the goal area X. Player A's goal is to put the ball in the goal area Y.

Green surface as goal area : game points count.

When the ball falls in the target goal area, the player who has hit the ball has to finish the game with putting moves. If the ball goes in the hole in one put, (s)he wins 3 points. If the ball goes in the hole in two puts, (s)he wins 2 points. If the ball goes in the hole in more than two puts, (s)he wins 1 points. The game is then terminated.

Circular goal area with simple flag : game points count.

When the ball falls in the target goal area, the player who has hit the ball has one point and the game is terminated. No putting in this case.

Penalties

When the ball falls in any penalty area, the opposite player is allowed to play one additional intermediary move (penalty move). The penalty move is followed by the normal move, by the same player. However if the penalty move brings the ball into a goal area, then the player hitting the penalty move has won the game (circular goal area) or is allowed to play a free put (green surface as goal area). If the penalty moves brings the ball into a penalty area, the normal move after the penalty move is cancelled - and the oppositie player receives another penalty move.

Sets and match: point counts.

At the end of the four games, the set score is computed as the sum of the games points. The set score may be a draw.

The number of sets is fixed before the match starts. The match score is the sum of the set scores. The match score may be a draw.

If the match requires the designation of a winner, but the match score is a draw, additional games or sets are organized.

More than 2 players

Instead of two players, the goalf match may oppose two teams of players.

In alternance mode, the players play after each other within both teams.

In free mode, both team my decide which player hits the ball at any time.

Additional Notes

Safety

For the safety of the players, a player ready to hit the ball should always show the direction and target of his imminent move, so that all players in the course my relocate themselves in safe places.

Strategy

As in several ball games, chosing where to send the ball implies not only concerns about goal areas and penalty areas, but some thoughts about the way the opposite player should face similar choices at the next move.

In many case hitting long distance my be relevant , but accuracy regarding course limits and special areas will be as importants.
